Friday March 5, 2020 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We will complete Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones on Monday.  We will also complete our viewing of the accompanying movie at some point next week.  I had planned on finishing the novel this week, but we were derailed by St. Baldrick’s Day on Friday. On Tuesday we will begin John Boyne’s novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas about the Holocaust in Nazi Germany in the 1940’s and the relationship that develops between a German boy whose father works at a concentration camp and a Jewish boy who is being held prisoner there.  We will also be viewing the accompanying movie. For more information on the book and movie please visit the following website.

Remember that parent/teacher conferences are next week.  If you have not yet done so, please select a time when you are available using the following link:

We attended Leadership Day at the Illinois Holocaust Museum on Wednesday and were privileged to view galleries featuring artwork from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia and another which celebrated the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

In Social Studies we continued to discuss the threat level posed by the Corona virus.  We also closely monitored the Super Tuesday primaries and looked at which states were won by specific candidates and what is likely to happen moving forward.

In Science, we learned how the video game Minecraft is helping researchers create smarter and more efficient computers.  We also looked into the benefits and drawbacks of artificial intelligence and worked to determine how artificial intelligence may best be controlled by humans instead of the other way around.

In Math, we continued to focus on divisibility and also looked into the different types of angles. Additionally, we had two very spirited 24 Game battles on Tuesday and Friday.
